Safeguarding living donors: Health Ministry to adopt regulation implementing law 458/67 – 05/26/2010

The Italian Ministry of Health will adopt a regulation to implement law 458/1967 which safeguards organ donating workers. Although the law has been in existence for over 40 years, no implementing regulation had ever been enacted. People donating a kidney or part of their liver to a relative always risked losing their job for the time taken off work to undergo medical tests. The case had been brought up after a man was forced to give up his job in order to donate a kidney to his own 5-year-old son.
